Music, Art and Synaesthesia
When Jane Mackay listens to music she sees vivid colours, images and shapes. Jane has synaesthesia, a neurological condition in which the stimulation of one sense leads involuntarily to the triggering of another sense.
Curated by Siobhán Doyle and Jane Mackay, Aesynth is a festival of events celebrating the phenomenon of synaesthesia and exploring how it can create interactions between music and art.
An exhibition of paintings by Jane Mackay will display a powerful realisation of string quartet works by Mendelssohn and Britten. These works will be performed by the Lir String Quartet, one of Ireland’s most exciting chamber music ensembles. The condition will be further explored through a screening of short films, Q&A sessions and an illustrated panel discussion by leading researchers in the fields of neurology and music.
